And So It Has Finally Happened…

I think I want to change my major.

Yikes.

A terrifying, yet not at all uncommon revelation for most college students.

I can easily say I did not see this coming, not one bit.

My senior year I finally landed on Journalism as my intended major, and as I began scouring the website of my college (at that time, University of New Mexico), I found the perfect degree plan. It was called Strategic Communications, and was a lovely mashup of journalism, advertising, PR and all that good stuff. It seemed perfect for me, and I was so exciting for all the options of classes I had to choose from. I was even planning on throwing in a few photography and creative writing courses, and then I would have the perfect education, in my mind.

Flash forward to summer, when I found out I would no longer be able to attend UNM due to financial reasons, and would be transferring to University of Houston and moving back home. At UH, their communication majors were all separated out, instead of combined like at UNM. I opted for advertising, as I dreamt of drinking whiskey in my future office Mad Men style (joking- kind of). Advertising never felt quite right though; I found myself often looking at the degree plan for it, and wondering where was the room for the creative classes? Why are they all focused on things like account management? Can’t I learn web design and photography with this degree?

This morning, I decided to finally start registering for next semester. I have been meaning to take a real photography class, so I figured next semester I might as well sign up for it! However, I quickly came to find out only Art department majors can take art classes… which is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. That was sort of the catalyst for everything. I started looking at the Art department page to see if there was a minor I could take that would let me enroll in art classes. From there, I stumbled upon the page for the Graphic Design major….

It caught my eye like no other. I was reading some of the class descriptions, and they sounded so cool. Plus, as an art major, I could take photo classes! I was thinking about the sorts of things I would want to do in the future, and what jobs I would want to have. I have always known I wanted to do something creative. Graphic design just made…. sense, all of a sudden. Graphic design, with a minor in advertising seemed like the perfect education, now.

I will be honest- it freaks me out that my career goals have changed so much over the past year- to the point where I want to change my major. I always thought I was so dead set on Journalism/Communications in general. I still love the field. I can still work in the field as a graphic designer. But I can also get my creative fix.

A girl I work with is a graphic design major, so I intend to talk to her and do some research and soul searching before I commit to this decision… but graphic design has me excited in a way that advertising hasn’t in a while…

To be continued..

Have you ever changed your major? How were you certain you were making the right choice? Let me know in the comments!

  1. That sounds potentially really exciting! I changed my major my senior year of college, and I am SO glad that I did. I started out as an Elementary Ed major, but realized that isn’t what I wanted to do. Some people told me to just go ahead and finish, I can get any job with my degree since it’s ‘just a piece of paper’ but I just wasn’t comfortable with that. I switched over to Technical Writing and LOVED it right away. I ended up taking an extra 3 semesters after my ‘senior’ year but I’m so happy that I found a field I WANTED to be in and went for it. Keep us posted!

    1. That makes me feel a lot better! Changing to graphic design would definitely set me back a little.. And it’s nice to hear that you were set back but don’t regret it at all. Seriously, it’s so important to love what you do- not enough people can say that about their job. I think I am going to email an advisor this evening to see how to start this process! I will definitely be keeping yall posted! 🙂

  2. I have changed my major, minor, degree AND university within three years. So yeah, I feel you. I’ve flitted from an arts degree to a communication degree. From linguistics (major) and Spanish (minor) to linguistics and writing studies to just linguistics (in one degree). I swapped to a communication degree then majored in PR then changed universities and cities then majored in PR and minored in linguistics then majored in journalism and minored in linguistics. And guess what? I’ve applied to swap my major BACK to PR.

Very poorly structured sentences, but I’m trying to get my point across. Ha. I have changed my degree structure a LOT. I have wanted to be a journalist for a decade. That is a long dream to hang on to. However, I didn’t really know about PR until two years ago. I got hooked on everything about it. I decided to chase my journalism dreams (because that’s why I changed cities and universities) but there was always that ‘what if’ sitting in the back of my mind.

Truth is: I don’t know if I’m 100% making the right choice. I just know that learning theories about PR makes me happy. Researching and creating campaigns (I have since created two mock campaigns) makes me happy. I guess I’m lucky that PR and journalism – whilst not completely interchangeable – are vey closely related, so I could get a job in either field…Regardless of what my major is 🙂

You know how I decided to change my major back? I flipped a coin. Heads for PR and tails for journalism. You know what you want the second that coin starts flipping. It landed on tails for me and I was disappointed. That’s how I knew that I was more passionate about PR and that I was going to make the right choice for me right now 🙂 That’s all you can really do 🙂

    1. Girl, I literally was just reading your blog the other day, all about your major changing adventures! Haha. I was creepin’. And yes that is so true about the coin flip! I know for sure my heart would want it to land on graphic design.. So I might as well take the plunge!

    1. Hahaha yeah I noticed that yesterday actually! I’ve been meaning to fix it but I’ve also been lazy.. Haha. Thank you though for pointing that out, in case I hadn’t noticed it!

  3. I have my Bachelors in Graphic Design! I absolutely LOVED going to school for it. I can honestly say I enjoyed all my classes. Its a great degree if you have the passion for it. I graduated in June and currently am not doing something related to my major 😦 unfortunately the job market is hard to get into. Its very competitive. You have to make sure you are different from all the rest. I really hope to still get into graphic design with the company i’m at now. I hope you’ll love it just as much as I did! Good luck! & if you ever need advice i’m here to help! 🙂

    1. Yes that’s what I’ve heard! Very competitive, but once you get your foot in the door, you’re in! Do you mind me asking what you want to do with graphic design? There’s so many different options out there so im curious!

  4. Girl, that sounds fantastic! I’ve changed my major 4 times and I think it is really important to not be afraid to change your mind in hopes of finding something that you absolutely enjoy. That sounds like a great major and the perks of getting to take photo classes is awesome! Can’t wait to hear how it works out or what you end up doing. 🙂

  5. I went from a Photography major to a Communications major(with a focus in advertising) after my first 3 years. I felt that I wouldn’t be able to get a decent paying job after college to pay off the student loan debt I had racked up. When I got in the communications classes I felt like I had found my place! I loved every advertising class. (I was going for more of the writing aspect instead of design.) When I graduated I was able to get a job at an advertising agency in meda-not exactly what I wanted but I am enjoying it!

    1. That is awesome! I am currently toying with the idea of a studio at minor, with my Advertising major still, and that way I can take graphic design and photography classes but still get the practical knowledge of a communications degree. Thank god I am still working on basics, so I’ve got time to figure it out, but that’s exciting hearing how your degree worked out well for you! 🙂

      1. That sounds like a good idea! That way you still get the classes you want without giving up that base degree. If I have any advice, get an internship. Get more than one internship while you are in school. I had 2 and they led to the job I have now. Good luck!

      2. Yes, internships! That as a big difference between the communications and the art degree at my school- a COM degree had a built in internship class, where you get credit for it and they help you find one, while the ART degree did not- which worried me a bit. I will definitely keep my eyes out for an internship next year! Thank you!
