Thankful Thursday

Can’t believe it has already been a week since my last Thankful Thursday! My days have been going by so fast lately.

This week, I have insane gratitude for one specific event in particular, and one specific entity….. the IRS.

Weird, right? I know.

Let me explain.

When I transferred universities,  obviously that meant re-doing my FAFSA for financial aid. I submitted it to UH, and lo and behold…. I got selected for this thing called verification.

Verification is a randomly selected process where you just have to give additional documents to the school so they can “verify” that the income claimed is correct. Or something like that. i don’t really know, the whole process seemed kinda pointless to me.

Okay, so I checked my student account and I needed something called a tax transcript. Of course, the immediate download feature for that on the IRS website was down, so we did a mail-in request, which was supposed to take about 10 business days to get back, which was perfect because this was maybe 3 or 4 weeks before school started.

Ten business days came and went. Nothing.

The start of school came and went. Still nothing.

At this point, we had to start a payment plan to start paying my tuition, so I wouldn’t get dropped from my classes and I couldn’t utilize any of my aid until I was verified. The payments were high, but we were making-do.

Finally, a letter from the IRS came in the mail!…… Six weeks later, to tell us that we forgot to fill out one tiny portion of the request form, and we would have to re-send it. I was about to rip my hair out.

More weeks went by. And then, my dad lost his job. Yikes.

This past Monday was the next due date for the payment plan. And of course, no one could afford it. I spent all day in a terrible mood, freaking out, crying about how I’d have to be a college drop out all because the IRS was taking their sweet ass time mailing me a letter.

To get my mind off of things, and the possible terrible consequences of this whole situation, I went to a coffee shop with my boyfriend. Literally, as soon as we sat down, I got a text from my mom… The letter had come!! Literally, only hours after my breakdown, the stupid freaking verification letter finally showed up in our mail box.

It was insane, uncanny, a miracle, whatever you want to call it.

My whole mood did a 180 and I immediately uploaded it to my school’s website.

So even though like 50% of me despises the IRS with a burning passion, the other 50% is so incredibly grateful. The timing was just perfect.

And there is my longest intro to a post ever. But, c’mon, if you saw “IRS” as #1 on my list of gratitudes, you’d be pretty confused without the backstory!
