Book Haul: Self Help

Lately, I have been in somewhat of a funk.

Sure, there’s good days, but there’s also a disproportionate amount of not so good days.

Of course, I am a woman of action and as soon as I notice myself slipping, I do everything it takes to pick myself back up again.

Something I have been lacking lately is inspiration and motivation and direction. Basically, if it ends with “-tion”, I was missing it. I’ve also been weighed down by stress from all of these factors blending today.

Naturally, I took to Amazon.

I scoured the book section for the perfect book. The perfect book to give me a new perspective and some fresh insight, but most of all words of inspiring wisdom.

Finally, I found the one. Or actually, the two.

Books

The book on the left, The Gifts of Imperfection, spoke deeply to me as I am indeed a perfectionist. Maybe not in the traditional sense of everything I do has to be perfect, but more so in the sense that if I do something that isn’t perfect, I beat myself up about it. I have incredibly high expectations for myself, and I try incredibly hard to exceed others’ expectations of me. Of course, this can lead to a lot of heartache on my part. The author, Brene Brown, actually did a TED talk on the importance of being vulnerable (emotionally) a while ago, that I watched on Netflix and loved.

The book is basically about imperfection, and how it is okay, and ways to be okay with not being perfect.

This book had rave reviews, and seemed perfect for me. Check it out here.

Inside

The second book I got was 20-Something, 20-Everything. Again, this one seemed perfect for me as well. It’s a book for women in their 20’s who are going through some of the craziest periods of life, and gives advice for dealing with all of the changes and finding direction. There was a chapter on finding independence, a chapter on answering the ever-important and ever-present question of ‘who am I?’, and even a chapter on plotting out your career, just to name a few. This book seemed like a wonderful tool to help me dig deeper into who I am as a person, and where I want to go in life- but most importantly, how to get there without losing my mind!

I also scored a stress-relieving coloring book… but more on that later!

I am so excited to start reading my books. I can’t even decide which to start first! Just having these books in my possession gives me so much peace of mind knowing that I’ll be able to gulp up all the wisdom and knowledge these wonderful women have to offer.

What are some of your books to turn to when you need some insight? How do you possibly choose which book to start first?! Let me know in the comments!

  1. I completely understand about the lack of “tions” in my life. I love the gifts of imperfections, I first found out about them from Hannah Hart. I will need to look up 20 something-20 everything as it seems right up my alley. I would really recommend the Happiness Project as it is always really good at helping me get my life together!

    1. I am about halfway done with Imperfections and I can barely put it down, I love it. Haven’t started 20-something yet, but I plan to do a review post on both as I finish them 🙂 I will definitely have to check out The Happiness Project! I’ve seen it before on Amazon, and the title always intrigued me- nice to know its a good read! Thanks!

  2. OMG someone just recommended the Gifts of Imperfection to me and I have been dying to read it. I think I deal with so much that that book could bring to light for me. I heard that TED Talk too and just about cried midway through, because I felt like she was talking straight to me. I am glad that you read it (and liked it). Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon!

      1. Hahaha, it’s okay! I am actually like already halfway done with it- it’s wonderful so far and I can hardly put it down. I plan to do a big review post of both books once I have finished them, so stay tuned 🙂 However, I already know I will be highly recommending Gifts of Imperfection, and I do think it would help you out and give you some new perspective, so check it out. 🙂
